Transformer oil deteriorates with use and time. The reason for the deterioration is the absorption of moisture from the atmosphere. Foreign particles which get into the oil from the atmosphere, the windings and other components are as a reason for the deterioration.
When the Transformer oil comes in contact with air, it get oxidized. This process of oxidation is also accelerated by the high temperature. In addition, metallic particles from the transformer components such as the windings, contacts, tank walls, etc can also result in chemical reactions which further cause decomposition.
Besides, oil undergoes chemical reactions which produce particles which do not dissolve in the oil. These particles are called sediments. These sediments alter the properties of the transformer oil. Periodic filtraion can remove these sediments.
