The Humming sound from the Transformer is caused due to magnetostriction. Magnetostriction refers to the change in the mechanical dimension of a material when placed in a magnetic field. This change in dimension is not visible to the naked eye.
The core of the transformer is made of sheets of electrical steel. These sheets rub against one another under the influence of the alternating magnetic field. This causes the humming sound.
Excessive humming can indicate overvoltage
