Protection Class Current Transformers are different from CTs used for measurement. These transformers are used in protection devices such as relays. These transformers are designed to operate at high currents which occur during faults.
Conventional Current Transformers will get saturated at such high currents and the relay will not operate.
These transformers are normally rated as 5P10, 5P20, etc.
A 5P10 transformer has 5% error at 10 times the rated current.
Measurement Current Transformers are designed to operate at lower currents. These transformers are designed to saturate at high currents so as to prevent damage to the measuring instruments such as ammeters.
